About Hart-Miller Island

Hart-Miller Island, located in Baltimore County, Maryland, was once a chain of islands nearly destroyed by erosion. Using dredged material from Baltimore’s harbor and approach channels, Hart-Miller Island has been regenerated. The island is now undergoing restoration to reestablish valuable wildlife habitat.

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, in cooperation with the Maryland Port Administration and Department of Natural Resources, has developed a unique plan to create habitat for shorebirds, terns and migratory waterfowl. The restoration is creating mudflats, shallow-water wetlands, and open water areas to protect nesting island habitat. These areas are critical due to limited stopover point during the birds’ spring and fall migrations. The National Audubon Society recognizes Hart-Miller Island as an Important Bird Area. For more information, see the Hart-Miller Island Fact Sheet.
